Jon Chong
With only weeks until the release of his first album, our SPOTLIGHT this month falls on Jon Chong!
Jon shares about purpose, inspiration and life as a Sarawak head hunter! Well maybe not, but it does make for a good intro…
A PhD graduate of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (yes, that MIT), there is a lot more to Jon’s life than Quantum physics and mathematical theorem, such as a little equation I have been pondering over of late, ‘Euler’s summation of 1+(1/2)^2+(1/3)^2+…’ not!
There are tales of jungles deep in the heart of Borneo, standing at cliffs edge looking at the vastness of the sea, of this planet, of all things great and small…and that’s just the inspiration for one of Jon’s songs…’Undeniably Yours’.
An avid sportsman and lover of the outdoors, thoughts and images of creation reveal Jon’s passion for the world around us, serving as seeds of inspiration for some of his songs. Whether the majesty and vastness of the ocean, the intricacies and wonders of a rainforest or the simplicity of sitting in a coffee shop watching the world go by… it seems that Jon’s song writing book does not stay dry for long.
There is, however, another source from which Jon draws deeply. A source that never leaves him wanting for inspiration, for purpose. This is of course his faith in God. As expressed in ‘Undeniably yours’ sometimes God will grant us a glimpse of His Greatness, abundantly evident in His creation. I must add at this point, that Jon also expressed his un-ending gratitude and love to his new bride. Evidently there are glimpses of their relationship woven into the lyrical and melodic fabric of the album. (Was that enough Jon?)
While studying in Boston, Jon speaks of a time which he calls ‘ a crisis point in my life’. Question upon question, to those around him and within his own heart. The answers varied and dissatisfying for the most part. Out of this labyrinth of unanswered questions one thing became clear, the constancy of God and his faithfulness. A glimpse of God’s bigger picture during this point of crisis, evolved into what was becoming an increasingly familiar way for Jon to express himself, a song. And so the engaging ‘Tell me why’ was penned.
We asked Jon how he views and measures success, considering his accomplishments and achievements in his life thus far. His answer reveals again the source of his passion for life. Jon shared that his benchmark for success was not the size of your account balance, your possessions and so on, there are many people living on one dollar a day that know true happiness, contentment. Rather, that fulfilling our God given potential will ultimately bring a far greater sense of fulfilment and satisfaction, of destiny and purpose in God.
When asked his plans, dreams and hopes for the album and future projects Jon stated ‘I think what I want to achieve, and it may sound like a very noble kind of goal, is to inspire people to pursue their God given dream or passion, each person playing their part in this world’. His desire is to reach as many people as possible with his eclectic fusion of musical influences. Stirring ballads of faith, hope and love. Songs about lifes experiences that will captivate your heart and mind with the goodness and greatness of God.
Finally, to capture the heart of Jon’s underlying desire, his message for all those who will hear the story of this young mans life through song, read the following statement from his interview. As you do, consider the way God is calling you to demonstrate His greatness, His goodness and His love. Maybe you are the feature artist we are yet to meet!
Jon said, ‘For me, the core of everything I do is my faith, it’s who I am…when you hear my stuff or I talk to people it’s in everything I say, it’s who I am’.
